Rochester, work, life....

Wow! It's been a really long time since I've written on here. Lots of things have obviously taken place. Aidan was born and now is three months old. He is the life of the party at all times with his smiles & cooing. I think he's going to be a rambunctious one....he definitely has lots of energy!

I started back to work on July 9th at Strong Memorial Hospital here in Rochester. I'm basically in orientation classes for six weeks with a few days here and there on the unit and then after that I'll be working for another six weeks with a preceptor to make sure that I'm learning all that I need to do to be a good nurse on that specific unit. I'm working on a VAD/Heart Transplant step down unit which means that I'm working with patients with serious CHF (Congestive Heart Failure). Most of the population is over 65 but there are a few young kids there also (20 & 22 years of age) with other heart conditions that require a heart transplant. That's sad cuz they are on the list for a heart transplant but no one knows when they'll actually receive a new heart. A VAD is a ventricular assistive device which basically pumps for the heart when your heart won't pump. It's a pretty neat deal. So...I'll be trained on CHF patients first, then VAD patients, and then SWAN patients. SWAN patients are basically ICU category patients that require IV type catheters going directly to their heart in order to keep them alive with medications. So all in all, I have a years worth of training ahead of me before I will even start to feel remotely comfortable with my surroundings. Hmmm....

Jesse is going to start back to school full time in September. He's working on his Education degree. We found out that he has to have his masters to teach though but NY State will pay for teachers to get their masters while they're teaching. So, that's not too bad. It just means another year or two of school for him though.

Aidan is getting so big now! He just had his first taste of rice cereal this morning. He's not sure that he likes it too much. I'll keep trying here and there of course. Eventually I want to be able to feed him that with his formula so that he'll sleep better through the night. I heard that works. We'll see about that. :O)
