I have often wondered about the link between depression and eating disorders. I mean it makes sense right? You don't feel good about you and then you try to fix the situation by eating more or eating too little...then feeling guilty about it later...
I was talking with a friend recently who admitted that she's been having a hard time with binge eating. She knows she has a problem with it but doesn't know how to get out of that habit. It's usually sugary foods that she craves which brings up another point...
Sugar....depression....food issues....they all go hand in hand!
According to WebMD and other sites: It is not known why depression and eating disorders are linked. In 2008, a study by the University of Pittsburg Medical Center indicated that 24% of patients with Bipolar disorder met the criteria for eating disorders and another 44% with depression had trouble controlling their eating habits.
Why is sugar a depressant? Here is an awesome read from Psychology Today about how sugar contributes to poor mental and physical health.

This week starts my clean eating challenge. Clean eating has truly changed my life and helped curb my sugar cravings. I still struggle with depression and sometimes with a distorted view of food...but it has definitely changed the way I think about food, curbed those awful cravings, and helped me lose some of that added weight.
